» Etienne Hatt, Art Press, 2025

Statement
For many years now, I have been creating work on the fringes of photography.
I don’t follow a set protocol. Empirically and intuitively, I choose to devise a new approach for each piece, tailored to the idea I’m developing and the sources I draw upon. From my studies in photography, I have retained a vocabulary related to analogy, fragments, imprints, and negatives. My works take the form of series, installations, and interventions that allow me to interpret—through counterpoints—the natural, cultural, or artificial phenomena that capture my attention. I am particularly interested in the details and materiality of photographs. I view them as objects, and I attempt to depict their traces and gaps. My starting point often takes the form of a collection of found images, which I assemble, replicate, and transform. I appreciate working with a medium that is, by definition, reproducible. Instead of worrying about the depletion of images, I try to reveal the wonder of the many, usually invisible stages that accompany their existence. "While others focus on photography as a whole or on its essence—that is, on the “photographic”—Giovacchini turns his attention to photographs in their multitude and singularity. Of course, he has at times focused on the processes and techniques specific to the medium. Nevertheless, what preoccupies her above all are images created by others—often old, anonymous, and vernacular—which she compulsively rephotographs or scans. Although she is familiar with archives and libraries, she is not an artist-researcher but, in her own words, a “voluntary wanderer” in the world of images.
More than just an iconographic artist—to use a now-established term—Giovacchini is an iconophagous artist who feeds on images and regurgitates them, not to exploit their documentary value but, quite the contrary, to reveal the mystery they contain." Etienne Hatt, Art Press, 2025
