Nemi est une œuvre polymorphe qui accompagne et conclut un vaste projet mené entre 2019 et 2025 sur le lac de Némi, situé dans la campagne romaine.
Mêlant mythologie, science et culture, la mémoire du lac de Némi agit comme une hyperbole navigant de l’Antiquité à nos jours. Ce site est une curiosité archéologique, marquée par le culte de la déesse Diane ; il est également célèbre pour avoir abrité deux immenses navires de Caligula, retrouvés lors de spectaculaires fouilles entre-deux-guerres. Ces vestiges, disparus lors d'un incendie en 1944, restent visibles au sein de la documentation photographique réalisée durant les fouilles, et maintenant conservées dans les archives du Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci de Milan. J'ai puisé dans ce fonds, réalisé initialement à des fins scientifiques, et je l'ai combiné avec d'autres images réalisées au cours de mes séjours à Rome, Némi et Milan, ainsi qu'avec des objets collectés, rares, épuisés ou reproduits. Ainsi, Nemi n’est pas la restitution d’une enquête, ni un atlas ordonnant le site de Némi. Égarée volontaire bien plus qu’artiste-chercheuse, j'ai fait le choix de composer avec les nombreuses pistes me menant à lui, sur place, dans les archives le concernant, et de collecter plusieurs objets, rares ou épuisés. Je me suis attachée à plonger dans l'imaginaire de ce lieu, à le transformer pour tenter d'en reproduire les mystères. Nemi est présenté en 2025 au Centre Photographique d’Île-de-France (Pontault-Combault), sous forme d'une fresque murale combinant tirages, panneaux et vitrines, puis en 2026 au centre d'art Le Lait (Albi), dans une forme renouvelée pour s'adapter au lieu. Un livre, publié par Poursuite, accompagne cette seconde occurrence. Certaines images vivent dans le seul espace du livre, tandis que l'installation visible au Cpif et au Lait permet de présenter des objets et de composer avec la capacité reproductive et évolutive de la photographie. |
Nemi is a multifaceted work that accompanies and concludes a vast project carried out between 2019 and 2025 on Lake Nemi, located in the Roman countryside.
Blending mythology, science, and culture, the memory of Lake Nemi acts as a hyperbole navigating from antiquity to the present day. This site is an archaeological curiosity, marked by the cult of the goddess Diana; it is also famous for having housed two huge ships belonging to Caligula, found during spectacular excavations between the two world wars. These remains, which were destroyed in a fire in 1944, can still be seen in the photographic documentation produced during the excavations, now preserved in the archives of the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci in Milan. I drew on this collection, originally created for scientific purposes, and combined it with other images taken during my stays in Rome, Nemi, and Milan, as well as with rare, out-of-print, or reproduced objects I had collected. Thus, Nemi is neither the result of an investigation nor an atlas cataloging the site of Lake Nemi. More of a deliberate wanderer than an artist-researcher, I chose to work with the many clues that led me to it, on site and in the archives concerning it, and to collect several rare or out-of-print objects. I set out to immerse myself in the imagination of this place, to transform it in an attempt to reproduce its mysteries. Nemi was presented in 2025 at the Centre Photographique d’Île-de-France (Pontault-Combault) in the form of a mural combining prints, panels, and display cases, then in 2026 at the Le Lait art center (Albi), in a new form adapted to the venue. A book, published by Poursuite, accompanied this second exhibition. Some images exist only in the book, while the installation on display at the Cpif and Le Lait allowed objects to be presented and to play on the reproductive and evolving nature of photography. |
